The programme also included a plenary lecture by David E. Seven panels on Eliot (comprising some thirty papers) examined the Waste Land as a symbolic or mythical space, as well as its presence in works by other American authors, and its relevance in an age of environmental awareness. To mark the centenary of The Waste Land, “Wastelands” became the meeting’s overarching theme, encompassing the various possible approaches to Eliot’s poem, and also the metaphorical aptness of its title, from capitalism in all its ferocity to the ageing body in all its frailty. The Predator Cities books are set in a distant future known as the Traction Age where city-states mounted on caterpillar treads for mobility travel around devouring smaller cities in an act known as Municipal Darwinism, which is such a cool concept. A bit confusing, yes, but also indicative of the detailed, layered and complex kind of world builder that Philip Reeve is. In 2001, Reeve published Mortal Engines, which became the first in his Mortal Engines Quartet, referred to as the Predator Cities books now that the Fever Crumb Trilogy of books, which take place in the same post-apocalyptic London world but many generations earlier, have been published. Phillip Reeveand David Wyatt have created what can only be called an epic in Larklight OR The Revenge of the White Spiders! OR To Saturn's Rings and Back! : A Rousing Tale of Dauntless Pluck in the Farthest Reaches of Space (which has a pretty cool website) and the trilogy of books of the same name. ![]() ![]() ( Click here for my review of Sister Carrie).Ĭarol is a young woman with ambitions to change the world. The choice of Carol as the central character means that Main Street also explores the same territory of female aspirations and limited career choices as Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie (1900), and this adds interest to Lewis’s primary critique. He labelled the power of small town life to inculcate its citizenry with enervating shallow values as ‘The Village Virus’, and the focus of the story is whether the outsider Carol will succumb to Main Street, or not. ![]() But Lewis saw small towns as claustrophobic, narrow-minded, anti-intellectual, mean-spirited and conformist. Sinclair Lewis wrote this savage satire as an indictment of small town life in the early 20th century – a time when prairie life was patriotically idealised as wholesome and honorable. Main Street ruffled more than a few feathers in small town America when it was first published in 1920, and I expect it has the same effect on some readers today, nearly a century later. ![]() ![]() ![]() USB-C ready With the included USB-C cable, you’ll be able to connect directly to an iPad Pro, a G-RAID drive, or your computer (with a USB-C port) to offload and transfer your media fast. ![]() Pakistani officials have accused him of illegally buying land from Malik Riaz Hussain, a real estate tycoon, while serving as prime minister, resulting in more than US$239-million in losses to.The premium aluminum enclosure of the reader helps keep your cards cool to help prevent overheating while you offload your media.
