In December, Rosa Parks made her most remembered act when she refused to give up her seat on the bus. She was a part of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and served as the secretary of the chapter in Montgomery, Alabama. Since Raymond was active in the Civil Rights movement, Rosa herself became politically active. At the age of 16, Rosa left school in Alabama to take care of her grandmother.Ī man named Raymond Parks, a barber, came into Rosa’s picture when she was 19, (1932) and she later married him. Rosa attended Miss White’s School for Girls and Montgomery Industrial School for girls both in Montgomery. The rest of the year was focused around working out in the fields. That is when her mother raised her and her brother on her grandparent’s farm.įor five months of the year, Rosa attended a black’s-only, one-room schoolhouse. James and Leona separated when Rosa was a young girl. Her mother was a teacher, while her father was a carpenter. They were both farmers who also held other jobs.
